The Valeo Innovation Challenge was launched in 2013 and has since become a headline event. For the third edition, a new category - "new ways of using cars" - was added to stimulate the emergence of disruptive ideas alongside the original Challenge category of "technological innovation". This year, students from all disciplines were able to leverage the opportunities created by digital technologies and apply them to cars and mobility in general.

Jacques Aschenbroich, Valeo’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, and Guillaume Devauchelle, Group Vice-President Innovation and Scientific Development, will announce the winners at a press conference on October 14 at the Maison de La Recherche in Paris. The jury will award two grand prizes of €100,000 to the top teams in each of the two categories, as well as two other prizes of €10,000 for each of the runners up.

The Valeo Innovation Challenge is part of Valeo's approach to open, agile and digital innovation focused on sustainable mobility.

At the 2016 Paris Motor Show, Valeo will kick off its fourth Innovation Challenge, the winners of which be announced in the fall of 2017.

Valeo would contribute to the joint venture its high voltage power electronics business (onboard chargers, inverters, DC/DC converters) employing around 200 people of which 90 are based in France. Its under-60V powertrain activity would not be part of this joint venture. Siemens would contribute to the joint venture its E-Car Powertrain Systems Business Unit (e-motors, inverters) employing around 500 people of which 370 are based in Germany and 130 in China.

The joint venture would be headquartered in Erlangen, Germany.

The newly created entity would leverage on Valeo’s and Siemens’ strong complementarity in terms of product portfolio and geographical spread generating synergies in manufacturing and sourcing. Its strengths in production and development would allow to target customers on a global level as well as in specific key markets.

Combining Siemens’ extensive experience in electric motors and inverters with Valeo’s automotive business expertise and worldwide customer base would provide both companies with a solid basis in the growing electro mobility market.”

The project is subject to consultation of the employee representatives and approval by the relevant authorities.

Chaired by Valeo’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jacques Aschenbroich, the jury will be composed of members of the group's senior management team, as well as prominent figures in the fields of science, the arts, politics and economics in order to encompass the variety of the competing projects.

The winning team in each category will take home €100,000 in prize money and the second-placed teams in each category will receive €10,000.

The Valeo Innovation Challenge invites students from around the world to play an active role in automobile innovation by designing the product or system that will create smarter, more intuitive cars by 2030.

Two categories designed to stimulate student creativity
The contest's continued success – with a record number of participants signed up this year – attests to the relevance of the challenge put to the students: "come up with an innovation or idea that will make cars more intelligent, intuitive, green and fun by 2030."

The "idea for new ways of using cars" category, created for the first time this year, has drawn 1,323 students from a variety of disciplines, including sociology, business, urban planning and design, indicating that a broad, diverse segment of society views the auto industry as dynamic and appealing. At the same time, there are 1,979 students competing in the "technological innovation" category.

70 Valeo experts across the globe will select the semi-finalists
Starting today, 70 Valeo experts spread across the Group's R&D centers worldwide – as well as a number of independent scientists – will examine each of the projects in order to select 24 teams that will advance to the next round.

The 24 short-listed teams will be announced on March 18, 2016, after which Valeo will grant them each €5,000 to develop their idea by building a functional prototype, application or other solution.

Spheros verfügt über ein weltweites Vertriebsnetz und stützt sich auf eine äußerst breite industrielle Präsenz mit Werken in Deutschland, Finnland, der Türkei, den Vereinigten Staaten, Brasilien, China sowie Indien.

Mit dieser Akquisition dehnt Valeo seine Aktivitäten im Bereich Thermische Systeme auf den hochdynamischen Markt der Autobusse aus, der in den kommenden Jahren um jährlich über 5 % wachsen dürfte, ein Wachstum das durch den weltweiten Trend zur zunehmenden Urbanisierung und der damit einhergehenden Entwicklung der öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel getragen wird.
Mit der Übernahme durch einen der wichtigsten Weltmarktführer für Thermische Systeme für die Automobilbranche wird Spheros, dessen Rentabilität höher ausfällt, als die von Valeo, beim Einkauf seiner Komponenten sowie bei der Konzeption seiner Systeme von einer verbesserten Wettbewerbsfähigkeit profitieren.
Dieses externe Wachstumsprojekt, das sich bereits im ersten Geschäftsjahr positiv auf die Ergebnisse von Valeo auswirken wird, ist Teil der den Aktionären der Gruppe im März 2015 vorgestellten Strategie, die auf die Erschließung neuer Wachstumstreiber abzielt, insbesondere bei den Systemen zur Senkung des CO2-Ausstosses.
Die Akquisition muss noch von den zuständigen Kartellbehörden genehmigt werden.

A pioneer in the field of intuitive driving, Valeo is developing an extensive range of technology systems using ultrasonic sensors, radars, cameras, laser scanners, head-up displays and software to make the car of the future more energy efficient, safer and more intuitive. With this acquisition, Valeo will strengthen its leadership in the field of autonomous, connected vehicles.

The acquisition of peiker, which will report sales of around €310 million in 2015, will have a positive impact on Valeo's results starting in 2016. The transaction is subject to the approval of the relevant anti-trust authorities.

Work on the new 3,044 sq.m. building (including 1,900 sq.m. of office space) began in mid-2013 and was completed in 2014, with offices ready for use in spring 2015. Featuring a basement, ground floor and two upper stories, the building can be extended a further three stories if necessary in the future. The CDA Bietigheim site currently accommodates 870 employees of 41 nationalities, and 200 more are expected to join by the end of the year.
